New York advertising executive Roger Thornhill is kidnapped by a gang of spies led by Philip Vandamm, who believe
Thornhill is CIA agent George Kaplan. Thornhill escapes, but must find Kaplan in order to clear himself of a murder it
is believed he committed. Following Kaplan to Chicago as a fugitive from justice, Thornhill is helped by beautiful Eve
Kendall. In Chicago, she delivers a message to Kaplan that almost costs Thornhill his life when he is chased across a
cornfield by a crop-dusting plane.

Roger Thornhill è un agente pubblicitario (erroneamente tradotto con il termine "pubblicista" nel doppiaggio in
italiano); dopo essere stato arrestato per aver guidato in stato di ebbrezza, racconta alla polizia una storia che ha
dell'incredibile: mentre si trovava in un albergo di New York, è stato avvicinato da due uomini che si sono rivolti a
lui chiamandolo George Kaplan, e lo hanno rapito e portato nella villa di un certo Townsend. Qui è stato interrogato,
costretto a bere del whisky e spinto in un'automobile, con l'evidente intenzione da parte dei suoi sequestratori di
farlo morire inscenando un incidente.

La polizia inizia le indagini, ma non giunge ad alcun risultato, anche perché gli investigatori, recatisi nella villa
indicata da Thornhill, conducono un interrogatorio frettoloso e superficiale, limitandosi a raccogliere le dichiarazioni
della sedicente padrona di casa, in realtà complice della banda, e non esaminando accuratamente gli ambienti della
villa, dove le tracce del sequestro di Thornhill sono state accuratamente cancellate o modificate (sugli scaffali, al
posto delle bottiglie ci sono dei libri, mentre le macchie di whisky sono assenti dai cuscini).
